Title | Sruti |
Details | Hearing, applied especially to the Vedas collectively in contradiction to the Smriti law. [Wilson’s Glossary]
The Sruti is regarded as one of the sources of Hindu law. The Sruti is believed to contain the very words of God. The name is derived from the Sanskrit root “sru” to hear, and signifies what was heard. [Mitra’s Legal & Commercial Dictionary]
The Sruti contains very little of lawyer’s law; it consists of hymns dealing with religious rites, true knowledge and liberation. There are, no doubt, a few passages containing an incidental allusion to a rule of law, or giving an instance from which a rule of law may be inferred. The Sruti comprises the four Vedas, the six Vedangas, and the Upanishads. The Upanishads embody the highest principles of Hindu religion. [Mitra’s Legal & Commercial Dictionary] |
